Date and Walnut Loaf
Years ago in a past life I used to sell things.
Sometimes it was fun and sometimes I was quite good at it. I didn't want to do it forever, so I stopped, but I still get the itch from time to time. For instance, I love to gently coax a friend into buying a dress that I know they will feel amazing in when they wear it out next. Or convincing another friend that they do look amazing in a hat (when they do) because not everyone can get away with wearing a hat. Some might say that I am spending (and wearing hats) vicariously - maybe so, but I do gain an immense amount of pleasure from someone I care about having something that makes them feel good.
So how do I sell you, person reading my blog that I care about, how do I sell you this seemingly dull looking date and walnut loaf?
When I used to sell things, I was taught how to sell something by explaining the features and benefits of whatever it was that I was trying to sell - features tell and benefits sell (I cannot believe I remember that...)
Please allow me to tell you about the features and benefits of this date and walnut loaf.
It's portable; this loaf can be taken anywhere! Take it to work or take it on a picnic, it's the loaf that travels.
It is unencumbered from distracting icing or glaze. This allows the eater to fully appreciate the firm but still yielding crust covering a dense yet tender crumb. Now say those last two sentences with a hushed tone and one raised eyebrow to the person you are serving it and revel in their reaction.
It doesn't have too many confusing ingredients; all you really need to care about are the two ingredients in the name: date and walnut. Sounds like health food yet tastes like toffee, nutty heaven.
The seemingly bland appearance means that your absolute favourite plate can take centre stage instead of the food you are photographing (just for a change).
It is a vessel for other flavours; Butter is welcome, honey is recommended.
Pair it with a dainty cup of tea and you have a very pleasant, somewhat "Nana" inspired afternoon tea if you are feeling stressed out. Afterwards you will feel restored to go about your day as a thirty-something year old again.
One bowl, one tin, one spoon, one egg. You're welcome. OK, two bowls but that is all.
(Now to close the sale)
Can you picture yourself slicing into this, anticipating the chewy sweet dates and the crunchy walnuts? Can you feel yourself munching on this with a cup of tea, becoming restored and ready to face the rest of the day? Can you picture your colleagues all nodding in appreciation to you for bringing in morning tea (intact after a long train journey, no less) when all the Monte Carlo's have run out? Are you looking for an easy reliable, go-to loaf recipe that will turn out fine each and every time? Well, I have just the thing for you.
I accept all major credit cards, but cash is preferred.

Would you send me a slice? looks delicious!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks absolutely wonderful. Look at the cross section. Love that the walnuts and dates are evident. Love the texture it would bring. And ooooh to the slathering of butter and honey.. oh man breakfast is calling!
ReplyDeleteLady, you've made the sale! Nothing is better than a simple fruit-filled loaf with lashings of butter, and this fits the bill nicely.
ReplyDeleteYou already have me sold on this one... i do find cake are like people; the glitzy ones with icing and all other bells and whistles, often are bland and dry when eaten... but a nice, simple, and honest cake like this one you've done, taste the best, and keep you coming back for more! (ohh! metaphors.. too much for a tuesday?!)
ReplyDeletehaha, you crack me up! That said, you had me at 'Date and Walnut Loaf' so for the rest I was just nodding along politely hoping for free gift wrapping services ;) Love the addition of olive oil too!
ReplyDeleteIf you keep the tea do I get the cake for free? Maybe I'll take you out for lunch sometime, just for a few thick slices. Anna, there's nothing unpretty about this cake!
ReplyDeleteWell, you've sold me! It looks divine. When can I come over for a slice? :D
ReplyDeleteHehe now I'm going to remember features tell and benefits sell! I'll also take a dozen ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid you won't need to sell this to me. I'm all too well aware that date and walnut loaf is the perfect carrier for butter!
ReplyDeleteYou're certainly a good salesperson! Though honestly, I don't need much convincing with those flavours. And I have to say, that is a stunning plate...
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to try and sell me, I think it looks and sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteButter OR honey? I see you used both, which is what I would do. (Do you consider dates a stone fruit? That is another thing that grows well here in the desert.) I love the plate you used, too! I think I will make this over the week-end for my office mates... (so that I don't eat the entire thing in one sitting!) ~ David
ReplyDeleteAhaaa! Laughed out loud reading that one Anna. Ooh I remember taking you shopping with me and trying not to get suckered in by your seductive sales pitch. Well I got suckered in again, I've never found a date and walnut loaf so exciting. Im going to make one tonight and be the office pet by taking it in to work tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteNo spiel necessary, you had me from the word go. It looks so wholesome and delicious. Can't wait to make it.
ReplyDeleteSold at that price! Looks and sounds divine.
ReplyDeleteDear Anna,
ReplyDeleteThis loaf looks really good and I don't think it needs any hard sell at all. You seem very convincing and I'm sure you were very good at what you did.
Ooooo... this looks great - and great selling techniques there Anna!
ReplyDeleteLOL! you sold me on the loaf. Actually I love these style of cakes, ones you can smother butter on an just enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI was sold at 'Nana style' afternoon tea! Absolutley delicious recipe and pictures!! Yum!!!
ReplyDeleteAnna, you think this is dull looking loaf, but I thought this is really beautiful cake and I especially love the last photo where you put the dark brown cake on the blue plate. Simply gorgeous. While people make colorful icing and fruity desserts, which are very nice too, but I most of the time I like simple treat like this one that goes well with a cup of tea. :-)
ReplyDeleteOMG, I love date loaf, but have never made one. You have made it look so simple... and yummy!
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to sell it to me at all! Both date and walnut are brown, which is why it may look "dull" but I assure you it's not at all! It looks so earthy and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI adore date and walnut loaves, so you won me with just the title :-) I have a thing for plain cakes and this is one which I have been eating since a very young age, although it is has been a while since I last tasted one. Must rectify that!
ReplyDeletehaha great post! it does sound yum but my hubby confessed to me a while back that walnut is not his thing!
ReplyDeleteSure, I'll take another hat - I mean, slice. And that plate, while you're at it...
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of dates, but I think I'd be willing to try this receipe :-)
What a powerful breakie this would make! Love all the ingredients.
ReplyDeleteooh that photo with the melted butter is fantastic!
